Artlab Projects: Innovative Intaglio: Fall Courses 2026

A two day workshop and overview in eco savvy Next-gen, innovative and safer etching with Friedhard Kiekeben using redefined high quality and archival materials, methods, equipment, and chemistry. Artists produce a small body of work.

  • Contemporary Printmaking and Art. The course program includes manual methods such as eco savvy acrylic resist and metal salt etching on copperplate, aluminum, zinc, steel, brass plate, plastics, found materials, and cardboard, with demonstrations in drypoint, digital stencil and photo etching without darkroom (Press n’ Peel), collagraph, Gelli plate, Dremel tool etchingTetraPak printing, color inversion printing, mono print painting, aquatint and Crisco lifthard and soft groundlow pressure printing, and more. Art and Science. Eco-savvy art. Reprographic and digital facilities are available on site. Friedhard Kiekeben is an international artist and the inventor of multiple safer etching methods and a pioneer in ‘acrylic resist etching’ and other new methods since the early 1990s. Today, certain acrylics are both eco-savvy and ideal for all types of professional intaglio work, offering new and enhanced creative possibilities. 
  • Inkjet and Intaglio Printing on Canvas.
  • Monoprint Painting and Gelli Plate Painting on Paper and Canvas
  • Full Drypoint Possibilities including Mezzotint and Dremel Tool
  • Hard Ground, Soft Ground, Aquatint, Acrylic Wash and tonal Reticulations
  • Modern Lithography using safer materials
  • Intro to Paper Making
  • This current course includes a revised Edinburgh Etch solution for clean copper etching, cleaner Saline Sulfate etch, updated electro etching. Easy photo etching and new halftones, and safe etching grounds for 2026; many of which are bio based and near Zero VOC. Many food grade materials. No plate sanding required. Efficient resist removal. Also, new inks and bio based Colorlab colorings. Cradle to cradle processes, new aids and catalysts, eco friendly waste reduction, and regenerative methods. All tools, art materials, chemicals, plates and paper are provided. Tea and coffee is on-site, and a Diner and a Wendy’s nearby. Free parking on-site. Handouts and email follow-up.
